The club’s kit manager enjoyed an incredible career with Everton before he suffered his second heart attack last year. He will return to Goodison on Saturday to thank Heartbeat, the charity that has rebuilt his strength

Legendary former Everton kit man Jimmy Martin did not want to leave Finch Farm.

A popular figure among players and staff throughout his decades of work with the club, he was more at home in the Goodison Park dressing room than any player or manager. But after suffering his second heart attack as he was preparing for the club’s pre-season tour last summer, he knew it was time to call it a day.

Speaking to the ECHO at Finch Farm, he reflected: “I actually went to bed. I’d been working here and I left the house at half past five in the morning for three days because we were getting ready to go on pre-season. I left at 10pm at night and it was an hour drive. So I was getting home at 11pm. I went to bed at midnight and I didn’t feel well and I just kept sweating. I knew, because I’d already had a heart attack 15 years ago.”
