On Thursday morning, the news portal actu.fr reported that former French defender Daniel Congré was found unconscious at his home in Pérols with severe stab wounds near his heart. Hours later, the newspaper Midi Libre confirmed that it was indeed Congré, who currently serves as the sporting coordinator at Lyon.
Since then, Montpellier’s public prosecutor clarified that the incident was not an attack but an attempted suicide. The former defender is now receiving treatment at Montpellier University Hospital, where his condition has reportedly stabilized.
It’s worth noting that Daniel Congré spent his entire playing career in France. Primarily a central defender, he was versatile enough to cover all defensive positions. A product of Toulouse’s youth academy, he transferred to Montpellier in 2012, becoming a club legend over nine years before leaving in 2021. He then spent the final three years of his playing days at Dijon. Congré took on the role of sporting coordinator at Lyon in October 2024.
